Even those on a shorter trip to Puerto Rico fall easily under the overwhelming spells of Old San Juan's cobblestone roads, softly painted colonial structures and terrific strongholds. From the fortified walls of El Morro, the charm of this spot is apparent in every course – from the maze of twisting and turning alleyways to unending shimmer of the Atlantic.

This – the crush of sand between the toes, the splendid shimmer of turquoise water and musical shush of peaking waves, perhaps the patter of your most loved record in the earphones – supplies a visit to Puerto Rico with the characteristics of a fantasy. From the brilliant, sickle molded paradise of Playa Flamenco (considered among the world's best shorelines), coconut oil-scented hordes of Puerto Rico's little reminiscence of Brazil, Playa Isla Verde, and the segregated, mangrove-concealed hideaways in the south to the thundering surf of the west, Puerto Rico's unending shorelines are the incarnation of your ideal paradise.

Few encounters can match the spine-tingling experience of drifting into inky waves under a covering of stars and witnessing one of the nature's most mystical tricks: the supernatural gleam of bioluminescent waters. Swimming or kayaking into Puerto Rico's bioluminescent coves and seeing the jeweled glint of water trickle from your hands or light up an oar stroke guarantees an affair of significant miracle. The bioluminescent waters in the coves of Vieques unveil the magic at its best.

A large portion of the island's most radiant spots for snorkeling and swimming lie out of the vigorously swarmed tourist areas, on satellite islands off the principle island's east or south drift and coral reefs in the southwest. In the morning, waters off these territories are perfectly clear and generally sufficiently cool to oar around for a considerable length of time and to cherish the profound visibility of up to 75 m. What can be an even better view – expect a mob of brilliantly shaded fish, coral arrangements and, in case you're fortunate, a lethargic sting ray.

Colonial Flair

On the off chance that you attempt to enjoy each and every reflector of colonial magnificence – all the fountains and noteworthy squares, each honorable estate house or buttressed 19th-century community hall – Puerto Rico's iconic structures would require as long as a month. Anyhow, if nothing else outside of Old San Juan complies with your time-table, take a walk around the Plaza Las Delicias in Ponce.
