No word can depict the grandeur and charisma of
the Switzerland’s Castles and Chateau. They have been awesomely architected by some
of the brilliant minds of the era, which seems to be beyond the imagination of
the person of normal diligence. Whether set in vineyards, standing on the
lakeside or roosted above the hamlets, these mind-boggling monuments are a
perfect incarnation of heavenly villas.

From the waterfront in Montreux, the fascinating
Chemin Fleuri (Flower Path) – a plush promenade surrounded by flowerbeds
decidedly tropical in shading and vivacity – sways groggily along the lake for
4km to the eminent Goliath stone of lakeside Chateau de Chillon. Standing
dramatically on Lake Geneva, this thirteenth century oval-shaped stronghold is
a labyrinth of yards, towers and corridors loaded with arms, period furniture
and craftsmanship. The land facing side is extremely protected with a
progression of fortified walls, yet its lakeside has lesser security layers.
Schloss Thun

Sitting on a peak and gloating about 900 years of
history, Schloss Thun is the palace which best matches your ideal fantasy land,
marked by numerous turrets and magical panoramas of the lake and Alps. It was
once possessed by Duke Berchtold V of the mighty Zahringen clan. Today it
houses a gallery, showcasing ancient and Roman relics, embroidered works of
art, majolica and a lot of sparkling armaments.
Chateau de Gruyeres

This beguiling turreted manor, home to 19
separate Counts of Gruyeres who controlled the Sarine Valley for about 500
years (11th to 16th), was modified after being struck with fire in 1493. In the
interiors you can see period furniture, tapestries and modern art and watch a
20 min long film. Don't miss the short pathway which is built all round the
chateau.

Transcending the Old Town, this medieval
fortification is Bellinzona's most noticeable symbol. Rise up to Salita San
Michele from Piazza Collegiata, or take the lift, covered somewhere down in the
rough slope in an uncommon solid shelter style architecture, from Piazza del
Sole. After meandering the grounds and the historical center, walk west along
the Murata, the stronghold's zig-zag defenses, with beautiful panoramas of
vine-streaked mountains and chateau studded slopes.

Grandly roosted on the lake, turreted Schloss
Oberhofen was pulled from Habsburg control after the Battle of Sempach in 1386
and now reflects Bernese lifestyle from the early 16th century to the climax of
19th century. A twist takes in the frescoed church, elaborate Napoleonic
drawing room and Turkish smoking room. The manicured English gardens provide
captivating views of the Bernese Alps.
